We’re excited to share the story of Kieran, a dedicated apprentice at Storm Aviation. Kieran’s journey highlights the invaluable experiences and opportunities available in aircraft maintenance apprenticeships in a recent interview.
A Passion for Aviation Maintenance
My name is Kieran, and I started my apprenticeship at 21. I had spent three years studying aircraft in college, but instead of pursuing university, I wanted to gain hands-on skills. That’s why an apprenticeship in aircraft maintenance was the perfect choice for me.
A Four-Year Learning Experience
My apprenticeship lasts four years, but since it’s an engineering program, my learning won’t stop there. I am currently working towards my B1 License, ensuring that my education continues even after completing my apprenticeship.
Responsibilities as an Apprentice
At Storm Aviation, my main responsibility is to learn and develop my skills—both in the workplace and in education. A key part of my role is understanding and adhering to company policies, which will be crucial throughout my aviation career. Additionally, I share my experiences with others who may be interested in joining the industry.
Mastering Tools and Equipment
So far, I’ve become proficient with basic hand tools like spanners and sockets, while also learning to use specialized equipment such as locking wire pliers, torque wrenches, and rivet guns. I’ve also gained experience with rigging equipment, multi-meters, and bonding test kits.
Key Skills Developed
One of the most important skills I’ve acquired is the ability to interpret engineering terms and use aircraft documentation, such as Aircraft Maintenance Manuals (AMM) and Structural Repair Manuals (SRM). I’ve also learned how to work and communicate effectively with others, as collaboration is crucial in this industry.
Learning from Experienced Engineers
Working alongside experienced mechanics and maintenance engineers is vital for my growth. Whether they have five or twenty years of experience, I always keep an open mind and absorb as much knowledge as possible. They are very supportive and always willing to answer my questions, helping me progress in my career.
Balancing Work and Study
The apprenticeship program is challenging, particularly because I’m studying for my B1/B2 licensing modules while keeping up with my apprenticeship workload and gaining hands-on experience in the hangar. I manage my time by setting aside study hours outside of work, similar to a school routine. Storm Aviation is also very supportive, allowing me to dedicate work hours to my studies if needed.”
The Best Part of the Apprenticeship
For me, the most rewarding aspect is the learning curve. Being surrounded by experienced engineers and mechanics who help me succeed in my journey toward becoming a B1 Licensed Engineer is invaluable. I also love that I’m gaining practical experience while earning a salary, setting the foundation for my future career.
Advice for Aspiring Apprentices
If you enjoy practical, hands-on work and want a career in aviation, an apprenticeship is the best way to get started. Whether you’re fresh out of school or still in education, take advantage of the learning mindset you have and apply it to an apprenticeship.
Looking Ahead: A Bright Future in Aviation
My apprenticeship at Storm Aviation is shaping my career exactly as I had hoped. Initially, I aimed for a B2 License, but my experience here has broadened my perspective on the many opportunities in the aviation industry. Now, my goal is to qualify as a fully competent B1 Licensed Engineer.
