Celebrating International Women’s Day with Rosie McCardie
This International Women’s Day, we’re proud to spotlight Rosie McCardie, a valued member of our Storm Aviation team. Rosie’s journey...
Storm Aviation offer apprenticeship programmes at our Glasgow-Prestwick, Base Maintenance Facility.
Apprentices undergo a comprehensive 4-year programme that combines hands-on experience in base and line maintenance and attending Ayrshire College. Throughout the programme, apprentices work through various engineering modules and work towards earning their Performing Engineering Operations (PEO) Certificate.
The program is flexible and can be tailored to allow apprentices to complete their NC and HNC in Aeronautical Engineering, with an option to pursue an HND in the fourth year. Additionally, apprentices will achieve an SVQ Level 3 in Aeronautical Engineering.
Casia Mancini, one of our talented apprentices, shares her experience and insights in a recent interview.
What inspired me to pursue an apprenticeship in aviation maintenance?
My first hands-on experience in engineering came through the PEO (Performing Engineering Operations) course at college. After that, I had the opportunity to do a work placement with Storm Aviation, which gave me a real taste of the industry. That experience led to an apprenticeship offer – and I haven’t looked back since!
Kieran shares his journey which highlights the invaluable experiences and opportunities available in aircraft maintenance apprenticeships in a recent interview.
A Passion for Aviation Maintenance
My name is Kieran, and I started my apprenticeship at 21. I had spent three years studying aircraft in college, but instead of pursuing university, I wanted to gain hands-on skills. That’s why an apprenticeship in aircraft maintenance was the perfect choice for me.
Meet Joe Harrold, a dedicated aviation maintenance apprentice at Storm Aviation. Joe shares his journey, experiences, and advice for aspiring engineers in a recent interview.
Can you introduce yourself and tell us what inspired you to pursue an apprenticeship in aviation maintenance?
My name is Joe Harrold, I’m 20 years old and have been working at Storm Aviation since August 2023. I grew up in Ayr and developed a strong interest in aviation after industry professionals visited my school to discuss the exciting opportunities available locally. I knew early on that I wanted a hands-on career working with tools and fixing things, so an apprenticeship in aviation maintenance was the perfect fit for me.
Storm Aviation offers work experience to students interested in the aviation industry. This experience provides insight not only into our hangar operations but also into various roles, including aircraft engineering, planning, operations, and procurement.
Casia Mancini, a year S6 student from Prestwick Academy first arrived at the Storm Aviation hangar at Prestwick Airport at the end of January this year. That was day one of her planned five-week extended school work-experience programme with us.
To say she was somewhat nervous and reserved on that day would probably be an understatement. Here was a shy young lady, absolutely determined to be a future aircraft engineer, experiencing her first daunting day in an aircraft hangar surrounded by licensed aircraft engineers and mechanics. We worried she would be overwhelmed by the situation. We needn’t have bothered.
Casia was soon firmly out of her shell and getting involved in planning and document control functions before progressing on to numerous other tasks including shadowing of aircraft cabin work, engines, wing panel installs and engine runs. Casia has jumped at every opportunity we have put in front of her in all areas of our business, and has excelled in everything she has been involved in. She is an inspirational young lady.
Casia has really enjoyed her time with Storm and is now focussed even harder on realising her dream of becoming a licensed aircraft engineer.
Casia is hoping to secure an engineering apprenticeship position with us when she finishes school this year, and we would be very happy to have her.
