At Storm Aviation, we take pride in nurturing the next generation of aviation engineers. We’re excited to highlight the journey of one of our apprentices, Joe Harrold, as he shares his experiences and insights into life as an aviation maintenance apprentice in a recent interview.
Can you introduce yourself and tell us what inspired you to pursue an apprenticeship in aviation maintenance?
My name is Joe Harrold, I’m 20 years old and have been working at Storm Aviation since August 2023. I grew up in Ayr and developed a strong interest in aviation after industry professionals visited my school to discuss the exciting opportunities available locally. I knew early on that I wanted a hands-on career working with tools and fixing things, so an apprenticeship in aviation maintenance was the perfect fit for me.
How long does your apprenticeship last?
My apprenticeship lasts four years, from 2023 to 2027.
What are your main responsibilities as an apprentice at Storm Aviation?
My main responsibility is to learn as much as possible from the experienced mechanics and engineers I work with. I also attend Ayrshire College one day per week to study and progress towards passing my B1 license modules.
What tools and equipment have you become familiar with during your training?
I’ve gained experience using a wide range of tools and equipment, including ratchets, spanners, nitrogen rigs, boom lifts, and scissor lifts, among many others.
What are some of the key skills you have learned so far?
I’ve developed essential skills such as effective communication, time management, and technical proficiency with the tools and equipment I use daily.
How do you collaborate with experienced engineers and technicians?
I’m fortunate to work alongside highly skilled engineers and mechanics who take the time to teach and mentor me. Their guidance and willingness to share their knowledge help me develop the skills I need for my career.
How do you balance the learning and working aspects of your apprenticeship?
I work four days a week in the hangar at Prestwick Airport and attend college one day per week. Balancing work, studying, and completing my SVQ coursework can be challenging, but with good time management and dedication, it’s definitely achievable.
What do you enjoy most about your apprenticeship?
I love the variety and unpredictability of the job. One week, we might be swapping engines, the next, servicing landing gear, and then fitting Wi-Fi antennas in the cabin. Every day brings a new challenge, which keeps the job exciting!
What advice would you give to a young person considering an apprenticeship in aviation or engineering?
I highly recommend an apprenticeship in the aviation industry, especially for young people in our local area. We’re lucky to have major companies like Storm Aviation, Ryanair, Collins Aerospace, Spirit AeroSystems, GE, and BAE Systems offering fantastic apprenticeship opportunities every year.
My advice is to focus on getting your National 5 qualifications and completing a PEO (Performing Engineering Operations) course at Ayrshire College. Then, apply to the companies that align with your interests and career goals.
How do you see this apprenticeship shaping your future career?
This apprenticeship is helping me build a solid foundation of knowledge and experience that I can continue to develop throughout my career. It’s an amazing starting point for a future in aviation maintenance, and I’m excited to see where it takes me!
